Death Squad

Just when I think I may have nothing of interest to post, something happens. This has been a very "interesting" weekend. Where to start...I think disturbing...

1. Disturbing events - 3 of us ladies headed out the Indian restaurant last night to have a few beers and masala dosa before a bit of dancing. We had wrapped up our meal and were waiting to for a colleague to pick us up to go dancing. Along comes an Afrikaner man who is looking for a bit of English. So he joins us at our table, proceeds to eat his food, and tell stories such as the following:

a. He was in the military during apartheid and openly admitted he was out to kill Mandela at the time.
b. His friend had killed over 300 people but he himself was better off because he had only killed 98.
c. Brainwashing of whites to hate the blacks, black hate crimes against farmers including the gruesome murder of a little girl, and overall racism in South Africa.
d. The fee per black skin that people were getting during that time.

I cannot make this up. It is tough because we are in a small expat community so you want to be cordial with everyone but this dude was mental! Then he asked us to go out dancing to which we noted we don't dance!

2. Disturbing...I coordinated my first dinner event. We went to the "chicken place" where the only menu items are grilled chicken (whole), fries and plantains. It was disturbing because people were so entitled to their food that they completely disregarded one person at the table who did not yet have food. Like really people, if everyone has the same thing on their plate how hard is it to pass a piece chicken down while they cook his chicken? It was appalling to see this like hoarding environment.

3. We had an accident today in the big bus. Our Community Liaison Officer coordinated a shopping tour. It was an excellent tour as we went to an excellent furniture and other wood-metal-weave products store with excellent craftsmanship and quality. We also went to the Art School which also has a shop. There was a hope chest that has definitely gone onto my wish list. On the way to the first shop, a car decided he could not wait for us to move and side swiped our bus.

4. When drinking beer, one must remember that 3 beers seems like a small quantity until you recall that it was 3 big beers which is more like 6-7 beers. Oh my was I hung over!

5. Today a shower with full water pressure and hot water. I was in heaven!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those are my most recent observations. I must rest my head as I am getting picked up at 07:45 tomorrow to get to the airport for my flight to Nairobi. As the Kenyan government announced a new holiday last week to be on Wednesday I may actually get the chance to go to the National park and do a mini safari. And, I get to see my friend Lisa === very excited.
