So, I have a mid-week posting as this has been a most fantastic week so far. First, I report that I have driven the streets of Kinshasa - moi-meme!!! My colleague has loaned us her car until she reaches post on the 22nd. So, I was behind the wheel as of last night. Envision people crossing the road in packs or individually, some balancing any number of things on their heads (including I have seen 8 dozen eggs), and cars driving the wrong way, head on. Then multiply by 2 for all of the holes in the road that take US potholes to a whole new level and what we have is driving in Kinshasa. But not only that, this loaner car is a stick shift!! Well, I have made it and am sure that when my car gets here I will be a pro. We are very excited to have this temporary car because we are now not living at the mercy of motor pool or bumming rides with our colleagues.
Today, I could not help but crack up when we were returning to my office building from a meeting and in front of the building a guy was taking a whiz at the tree. It wasn't so much just the whizzing that had me but the look on his face like everything was normal. Well it is normal for Kinshasa but for me...only when your drunk and need to drop your drawers should you do so.
I have been hearing about the Sharks Club which I finally visited today. Why am I so interested? Well...because it has a boxing gym. Not quite like what you would think of in US terms but I met Coach and am hoping to sign up starting in September. Yippy!!
Well that sums it up - public whizzing, drive blitzing, and boxing slipzing equal a good day in Kin town.
