Caterpillars anyone?
Caterpillars are such a lovely little bug. But, here in Congo, they are considered to be quite a tasty delight. I was hoping that during my time here I would be able to avoid having to choke one down but ohhh no. I couldn't be so lucky! Yesterday Alain and I paid a visit to his sister's house where three of his sisters insisted that we stay for dinner. They had after all been working away to prepare my favorite - mushrooms. So we stay and have our plates splattered with fufu and mushrooms. Then his brother-in-law decides to point out the caterpillars which were disguised in the sauce, not that you could not distinguish it once in your mouth. Blahhhhhh! I choked down one by accident but was lucky that Alain took it upon himself to finish my food subtly.
We got back a few weeks ago and so far so good on the health front. Well of course, there is the weird virus that gave everyone the nickname of poopy one.
We were tossed right back into life in the Congo. On the first Saturday back I dropped my cell phone when getting out of the car. An 8-year old boy took the phone, turned it off, and hid it in a tree all in the less than 1 minute until I realized it was missing. 1 hour we were there and while the kid denied then told others where the phone was. $20 to get the privilege of my phone back. Irritating, but my own fault.
Shop Rite opened right before my leave and I had not yet visited. Now, I could live there! It is like a Super Walmart just 5 minutes from my house. All the other markets are crying about price undercutting. But, I am not shouting anything but hello wallet in my bag. Cereal that was $16-$20 is now $10. Cheddar cheese that was $10-$15 is now $5. I am in heaven! Now all I need is PriceSmart and I will be good to go :)
Alain had a successful championship boxing match on 30 June. One of his boxers had an exhibition fight that ended in an awesome knock out! Unfortunately, is heavy weight boxer was sloppy and lost. All in all though the event was great and we can look forward to the next season in 3 or so months.
Work is going to get pretty busy. Tom is leaving post at the end of the month so I finally get to take the reigns. It will be a lot of work heading into the end of year in September but as you all know I love busy.
Well, that is the short and skinny for now.
