Yes it has again been a log time since my last post. I thought you might get bored with my daily battles with the taxis. But, just when life gets to the same old same old...we have much to report.
I want thank everyone who emailed their best wishes and concerns. In fact the explosions were in Republic of Congo but interestingly just a short distance from us across the river. My housing is about 1-2 kilometers from the river and there is another house between me and the river so I was well buffered from the blast waves. I was actually lying in bed with the windows open reading my book. When the first explosion went off I thought it was thunder. The second explosion I looked out the window and thought it did not really look like it was going to be a stormy day. The third I contacted my friend and asked her if it was thunder. A few minutes after that we got the notice to get in our safe havens in our residences and away from the windows. The house shook but no damage in our compound.
Alain was already at work and the first explosion caused damage at the gym. Luckily he was able to get out of there and come back to my house quickly.
There was significant damage to residences (including the Ambassador's house) and my office building. Mostly blown out glass windows from the power of the explosion wave. The stories coming from Brazzaville are heart wrenching. Our office is helping to support relief efforts. So, not a happy way to start a Sunday or continue the week. And, for my non-news following friends:
So, we are safe and sound!
